Our Service Model

While advanced modeling capabilities are my specialty, Malone Quantitative provides you with comprehensive data analysis services.

Best practices for quantitative research begin before data collection. I encourage researchers to engage me at the study design stage. Many aspects of the design and data collection can aid (or impede!) your ability to get the most from your work.

When the data have been collected, the next steps are description and visualization. At this stage, I work with you to explore, describe, and discuss the nature of your data and emergent patterns, which I present both numerically and graphically. We learn about the ways in which your research participants respond to the data collection instruments.

I discuss the details of your research questions with you and propose hypothesis-testing strategies tailored to your study. Taking a "teach to fish" approach, I work with you to understand the advantages and disadvantages of alternative strategies before moving forward.

Throughout the analysis process, I maintain close contact with you, providing intermediate results and assuring that my plan is on track to provide the results you need. But my work does not end when the analyses are complete. I take care to discuss the statistical results in relation to your questions and hypotheses so that you come away understanding exactly what your data do and do not indicate, and what conclusions can be soundly based in the results.

Finally, I am happy to contribute to the reporting of the results in a manner consistent with your research discipline.


Analytic Services

I have found that my analytic work is most efficient starting with the complete, cleaned, de-identified dataset in its native format. Malone Quantitative has licensed access to datafile conversion software and I can efficiently prepare the data for the most appropriate analysis tools. Starting with the complete raw data means that you and I do not have to spend resources going back and forth to add variables and manipulations in response to preliminary results, reducing both the time required and the likelihood of introducing errors.

From the raw data, I work with you to implement or design the measurement models for your variables of interest, whether that is a scoring algorithm you provide, measurement modeling that I conduct, or any combination. I have particular expertise in measurement invariance modeling, whether your data are collected from different reporters, at different ages, at different times, or from different demographic or cultural groups.

The analytic services from there depend on the research questions. I will identify the best methods to test your hypotheses. I am also equipped to develop novel approaches or combinations of strategies if that best suits your needs.


Our Business Model

The first step in my collaboration with you is a discussion of your needs, and whether Malone Quantitative is best suited to meet them. This stage is before any contract for services is signed, and you will never be billed for the first hour of this process.

The Contract

My standard contracts for services take one of two forms: For an hourly model, a retainer is held against the final invoice. Time is tracked electronically and invoiced monthly. The contract duration is 12 months, but there is no presumption as to the number of hours of my services you will need. Rather, the contract protects my clients from any change in rates or terms during the year. Alternatively, for a project of defined scope, I can work for a fixed fee with an initial deposit and the remainder invoiced in installments at project milestones, as arranged at the start of the work.

Once the contract is in place, we begin our work together.

Data Security

I take data security seriously. While I do not at this time have a contract with an Institutional Review Board, my share of the work—as long as I never see individual identifiers in your data—seldom qualifies as research with human subjects by the standards of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

That said, I never transfer raw data through non-secure e-mail. I use secure FTP (either on the client's server or mine) or, for convenience, a client-specific, shared transfer folder on my dedicated Malone Quantitative Dropbox account with two-step verification (Dropbox security standards). Your data—including data in the Windows 7 partition—are also encrypted locally with the XTS-AES 128-bit OS X FileVault 2 before upload to Dropbox. Finally, the encrypted files, including both data and analysis scripts, are continuously backed up to both Dropbox and an on-site external drive.

Computationally intensive data analysis is conducted on virtual machines in the Microsoft Azure cloud. Azure has been certified as meeting high standards for data security under both the U.S. Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program and the European Union's Data Protection Directive.
